Northern Territory 491
Commitment Statement
A first-person statement addressing the Territory’s central question: whether the applicant will actually stay.
What the Territory is assessing
The Northern Territory nominates on the strength of a commitment to live and work there, and it is candid that retention is the concern. The statement has to make a credible case that the applicant has understood what living in the Territory involves and has chosen it deliberately.
The material that does this is concrete: the employer or the labour market for the occupation in Darwin, Alice Springs or a regional centre; housing costs actually researched; schooling; climate; the distance from family and how the applicant has thought about it. Statements that read as though the Territory were interchangeable with any other region are the ones that fail.
What the statement covers
Where the applicant is now, and any time already spent in the Territory
Occupation, qualifications and skills assessment position
Employment - current, offered, or the demand the applicant has researched
Housing, schooling and settlement research specific to the city or region named
Family, community and other ties to the Territory
Family members included and their plans
Why the Territory rather than elsewhere, answered rather than asserted
A statement of intention consistent with the rest of the application

Common questions
Onshore or offshore?
Either. The form asks where the applicant is, and the statement is written to the criteria that apply.
Does the applicant need a job offer?
Not for every pathway, but employment evidence strengthens any of them. Attach a contract or offer if one exists.
How specific does the settlement research need to be?
Specific enough that it could only have been written by someone who actually did it - named suburbs, real rents, the actual registration body for the occupation.
Can you write for both Tasmania and the NT?
Yes, but not as one document. Each is written to its own program.
How long does it take?
10 to 12 working days as standard, or 5 to 7 working days for 30% more and 1 to 2 working days for 50% more - chosen on the form.
